I Finished My Work In Progress

Its been beating me but I finally triumphed. Well, just with the first draft. But I'm officially not looking at it tomorrow. Want to know how I know when a book is done? When I CANNOT stand my characters anymore. I need them out of my head and away from me.

This book is done. For now. Until its time to edit. But for now...Yeah...It Feels Good!

Six Sentence Sunday

Faith Anderson stormed into the Institute. She was wet, cold, and naked thanks to the shift she had made, which had destroyed her clothes. Months ago, the last fact would have bothered her but these days she'd gotten so used to being nude, to seeing everyone else in nothing but the skin they were born in, that she really didn't care one hoot who saw her. But the cold and wet bothered her. Not to mention the burn in her belly stemming from a mass conspiracy to keep a very important fact from her.

There was another Kane on the island and apparently he was her mate.

They Say A Storms A'Comin...

Well, its Saturday. I know a lot of you have been hit already by Hurricane Irene. I hope your indoors, safe, and that your power is still on. I hope the storm passes fast leaving only the memory of a lot of rain and wind in your mind. Pushed away by the beautiful weather that is bound to follow it.

As for me, here in New Jersey, we are still waiting for the storm to begin. The clouds outside look somewhat ominous and the humidity has picked up the point that I feel like I'm living in New Orleans again instead of New Jersey.

Our little town tends to lose power if someone sneezes to hard so I am fully expecting a power outage to be here just as soon as the storm arrives. My son is off now at a lesson and I will pick him up shortly. Hubby fell back asleep upstairs and for now I'm leaving him alone. I have to go to the drug store and get wrapping paper for my middle son's birthday on Monday. He's turning four.

Even with the storm coming, the rest of our life continues.

Stay warm and safe.

Best

Take 6 Kids to the Statue of Liberty

I had pictures on my camera that I was going to share on my blog today but at first I couldn't find my USB cord and now I can't find my camera. Sigh. Oh well. So, Lady Liberty is posted above instead of my looking horrible smiling for the camera with my kids.

Hubby and I arrived home from vacation with our 3 kids (we'd been gone for 10 days) and two days later our very good friends who live in the Washington D.C. area arrived for three days to visit with us. We were very excited about them coming, we do get to see them every summer and its always a treat.

My children (all boys) are 6, almost 4, and almost 2. Their boys (3) are 6, 3, and 2. You can see why it works so well when we get together. Plus, we really like them. We've been friends since school and we were actually there when he proposed to her. Very cool stuff.

Anyway, my friend is a real 'go-go-go' person. Its amazing because she has the three kids and is currently pregnant with their 4th (a girl.) As a side note, seeing her pregnant with the 4th baby did not make me want to get pregnant. This is a change from the past when I would long for pregnancy and another baby. I think I am really over pregnancy now. Phew. On another side note, all of our kids are blonds. All of them. Its very funny to take them all out in public together. People stare. 6 blond boy children between the ages of almost 2 and 6 tearing around.

But I digress. My friend wanted to go to the Statue of Liberty. So we did. We took 6 children who are all 6 and under to the Statue of Liberty. It was really something. And ultimately we had a really good time, despite the chaos of the whole thing. The 6 year olds loved it. The others? Well, they were glad to be getting out of the house. My husband had to work and my friend and I started joking with her husband that people might think we were some kind of polygamist family since all the children were blond, could be related, and he was the only guy with us.

If my friend hadn't really wanted to do the trip, I probably wouldn't have done it. So I'm really glad she is who she is and that she likes to go-go-go. Its good for me. Oh, and I finished a chapter in my book that took two weeks to write. All in all, fun times. (For the record, we also took all the children to Time Square but I do that a lot. Its not as AHHH, what am I doing for me)

How are you?

Six Sentence Sunday

Today's six are from the opening of Summer's Wolf. The second book in the Westervelt series. Please make sure to check out all the 6 Sunday entries here!

Death.

Someone inside her parents’ house was dead.

Summer Morrison shut the front door with a thud and covered her nose and mouth with her hands. She tried not to gag. The stench of rotten flesh permeated through her hands, into her nasal passages and then coursed around her bloodstream. Her heart pounded and her stomach churned as its contents threatened to make an undesired reappearance.

The End of the Book Blues

Almsot every time I sit down to write a book, the same thing happens to me. I write and write at an enormously fast pace and then--splat--I approach the end of the book and my pace just falls off. I'm lucky if I can get two pages written before I have to take a break.

I don't know why this happens but I've come to think of it as my end of the book blues. That's where I am right now. I'm on vacation, I have all the help in the world with my kids, and time to write. So what am I doing? Not finishing the book, no. I have the end of the book blues.

Blah!

Vacation Update...

So this picture is actually from a few days ago. My dad, my brother-in-law and three out seven children running in the surf outside of my parent's condo around sunset. It was a beautiful day. Since then, my husband has taken our older two children, joined his family, and gone to Disney World leaving me alone at my parent's with our youngest child, who is about to turn 2.

We've been having lovely quiet days. I've been getting a lot of writing done, a lot of sitting on the porch watching the waves from the security of the shade. I am a redhead. I don't care how much sunblock I put on, I burn.

Right now there is a minor crisis going on. The fridge in my mom's house has broken and the repair people may or may not be able to replace the motor today. Very frustrating and I feel terrible for my mom. Although we're her family, we are still company, and it has to be awful to have major appliance failure during a visit.

But we're very happy and I'm contemplating writing another chapter now.
Best to all of you.

My Toddler and Me...

Its been the almost two year old and I for a few days now since my husband took the older two boys to Disney World. I look terrible in this picture but he looks cute so I'm sharing it.

A Better Blog Post

So, despite the fact my almost-two year old son got me up WAY too early today, thus prompting my complaining blog post about needing more sleep, I am having a really wonderful vacation. (Thank you Mom and Dad for letting me go back to bed for a little while this morning.)

My husband has taken off with my older two kids (wow, that sounds like he ran away when, in fact, we agreed he would do this) and gone to Disney World. It's only the almost-two year old and me hanging around my parents' place right now and we've been having a lovely time even though I am missing the hubby and the older two like crazy.

The picture above was taken Friday night at sunset. Beautiful, isn't it? Why is it that I only notice sunsets on vacations? The sun set sets every day and most of the time I am completely unaware of it other than a signal of things still needing to be done before the day is done or a sign that everyone needs to be fed.

On vacation, I'm like oooh and ahhh, the sun is setting.

Nothing Like..

The baby getting you up before dawn on your vacation. Yawn. Tired. Want More Sleep.

Six Sentence Sunday

Todays six are from Her Wolf: The Westervelt Wolves Book 1, the book that started it all for me. You can purchase it here or at most online bookstores if you are interested. Make sure to visit all the 6-Sunday authors. The list can be found here.

When she found him, she stopped breathing for a second as pleasure swirled within her chest. With his dark mane and his proud posture, he would have stood out even if he didn’t avoid the others. She walked closer, just to the edge of where he was visible to her, careful not to draw attention to herself.

Loneliness hung like a tangible cloak around him. Ashlee chuckled at her crazy thoughts. God, if anyone heard her inner dialogue, they’d think she was talking about a man, not a wolf.

Vacation...

So we've been having a a wonderful vacation at my parent's house. Today, however, my husband is taking the oldest two children off to Disney World for a few days leaving me with the youngest child at my parent's house. I am thrilled for them that they are going to be having a wonderful time (and I am not as much of a Disney-fanatic as my husband's side of the family) but I am sad. They're leaving me!! Still, I'm sure we'll all have a wonderful time and be back together in five days.

The weather where I am is hot but perfect and I'm looking forward to more swims in the pool and walks on the beach with my baby! (Who is really not a baby anymore but will always be a baby to me, I think.)

I'm on vacation...

As you are reading this, I am probably on an airplane with all three of my kids. Groan. I hate flying. I just do. It doesn't get any easier no matter how long I do it (And I fly a whole lot) so I guess its just always going to be one of my 'things.'

But I will be posting periodically. Talk to you all soon!

I have a headache and it sucks!

Hi everyone. Hope you are all feeling better than me. I went to sleep last night, feeling like I had a slight headache. I assumed, as I had in the past, that it would go away. However, at 1:30 AM when the pain was so extraordinary that I woke up practically in tears, I found myself looking for some relief. When the over the counter pain medication didn't do the job, I took a Benadryl hoping it would clear my sinuses and give me some relief.

It did. But now today I am a zombie. I cannot wake up and to make matters worse, I can still feel that headache hanging out in there, waiting for its chance to strike.

Wishing you all a blessed day!

He sliced the air with his hand, cutting her off. “You must cease dying this very instant. Whatever must be done to get better, do it.”

Despite her resolve to stay stern, a grin crossed her face. He sounded like such a Mer. Her people, if they could still be called that, didn’t understand how life worked outside of the ocean waters.

Today is my release day for Return To The Sea. It can be purchased here or at 3rd party sights.

Here is a blurb:

The clock is ticking for Laneigh. Banished from the ocean ten years earlier, Laneigh is shocked to discover all the Mer people living on dry land die within a decade of leaving the sea. With her life ending, she boards a cruise ship, intent on challenging the Mer who destroyed her life. She doesn't expect him to save her—but she has a request she is desperate he honor.

Hearing Laneigh’s name on the wind, Sylarus, son of the Mer king, is powerless to stop himself from seeing her. Defying his father’s edict, he rushes to meet the woman he’s desired his whole life. But when he learns of her impending death, something shifts deep inside Sylarus. He cannot—will not—let her die.

Sylarus and Laneigh face tremendous odds to be together. In the end, they will either change Mer society forever or perish in the attempt. Can true love forgive after a decade of betrayals?

~Excerpt~

“Then you are disobeying the edict for no good reason.”

Laneigh hoped her raised eyebrow let Sylarus know how she felt about his remark.

“You aren’t going to tell me why you’re here?”

Laneigh stared at the floor. “I would if I could speak past the lump in my throat.”

Some things had changed. Ten years earlier, she never would have admitted anything burdened her. But parenthood had taught her humility.

He stepped closer to her, and the distinctive aroma of the seawater on his skin drifted to her nose. In a kind world, she could have rubbed herself against him, letting the scent take hold on her own body.

“Did you come because you missed me?”

She stroked her hand over the side of his face. “Is that hope in your voice?”

“I have hope that after a decade of denying us both what we want, you’ve come to your senses and will apologize to the king.”

Exhaustion threatened to overtake her. She shook her head and dropped her hand. Beneath her fingertips had laid a day’s worth of stubble. Whoever was responsible for his care had let him get scruffy. “Your father will live his whole life without my apology.”

He sighed and looked down at the deck. “Then what is it?”

“I’ve come for you. That is true. But not for my own freedom.”

New Book Video--Another Chance

Should I read or should I Write?

That is my issue for today. I have the choice to continue to Beta read something for another author or to write my Chapter 12. The problem is that once I start Chapter 12, I won't do anything else until its finished, which means the Beta read would have to wait until I was done with 12, whenever that happens.

I think that I am going to finish reading the Beta read before I start 12 so I don't take months to read the Beta story I have sitting on my Desktop...

The Sounds Of Our Life

One of the millions of things that have stuck with me since the unexpected passing of my father-in-law earlier this year, was the statements my sisters-in-law made about the absence of certain sounds from his house. The way he cleared his throat could be heard echoing through the whole house. The way he brewed coffee in the morning.

For some reason, this has been resonating with me and in my day-to-day life I seem to be preoccupied with focusing on the noises I hear everywhere. For example, when I spent the day at my own parents' house last week I started to listen to the sounds my father made from across the house or the way their dishwasher has always sounded, even when I was a child.

In my house, as I sit here right now, I can hear my baby (who is not really a baby anymore at nearly 2 years old) saying 'All Done' and the sound of cleaning fluid being sprayed on the counter (thank you honey!) in the kitchen. I was awoken this morning by the sound of the cat meowing for food before any of us had gotten up.

I don't include sound in my writing all that often. Smell, taste, touch--yes. But sound, not as much and it is a pivotal sense. Usually, if its important that a character hear something, I write it in. Otherwise, I haven't spent that much time thinking about it.

From now on, there will be sound in my books as this writer has discovered how much she counts on hearing certain things every day.

How about all of you? What do you hear?
