I Need a Hero

When you think of classic romance, what stories stick in your mind? What do all the best-loved stories have in common? We think that special something is a Hero.

Liquid Silver Books is looking for stories that feature Heroes. Whether these Heroes are on the nightly news, or unnoticed, or hidden as they go about their work, they all deserve that one person who’s not only their perfect partner, but who also brings them a very special “happily ever after.”

These stories’ protagonists must be strong and capable, but should not be perfect – they should feel real, complex, with normal faults and problems, and they should learn important lessons about themselves as they fight to overcome the odds. There can be strong secondary characters, but the building relationship between the protagonists while they battle an intense and gripping conflict or villain must be the main thrust of the story.

Heroes stories can fall within any heat level, fitting our Platinum, Sterling, Liquid, or Molten guidelines - see www.liquidsilverbooks.com/guidelines.htm for more information on our heat levels. But they are romance stories, not erotica - there must be a strong and compelling story linking everything together, not a series of sex scenes. They must be 15K or longer, and can take place in any setting, from small town America to the vast light years of outer space. They can include paranormal elements, such as shifters or alternate worlds, but the underlying Heroes theme must ring true.

So some of you may have noticed yesterday (or maybe you did not and that is fine. LOL) that I added a release date to the sidebar of my blog. On February 24th, I have a story called Unwanted Mate releasing.

It is part of Decadent Publishing's new series called The Edge. Specifically, the set of series that I have written are called Shifters and Bikers. The Edge is an erotic line (think very hot.) and they are one scene each. One scene to tell part of a love story.

I don't have a cover yet but I will show them to you as soon as I get them. Can't wait to show them to you!

They are called: Unwanted Mate, Bar Mate, Mate By The Music, and Out Of Place Mate.

As if her explanation cleared up everything, she'd patted me on the hand and gone back to grading her papers.

I’d gotten up and continued on with the rest of my day. Personally, I thought it more likely the neighbors didn’t want to get attached to a person who had a one in four chance of dying on her sixteenth birthday than some great weirdness caused by what my father did.

Letting It Go

I have just had to stop writing my work-in-progress. As much as I think the chapters are going well, I'm just not finding my usual excitement flowing through my fingers. Although it is the next book on my list to write (yes, I keep a list) the muse is just not feeling it right now.

So, I'm taking a break. I'm putting it aside. And I'm going to try to write something completely new, something completely off the cuff.

I guess I'll see how it goes.

For the record, that meant he had been trashed nearly every night for over fifteen years.

This is the third book in the series and Loraine and Gabriel's story.

I thought today that rather than show you six sentences from one of my published books, I would show you six from my work in progress. I am writing the third book in my YA series the Warrior. The covers for the first two published books are above. Please note, the following has not yet been through any kind of editing. So forgive me any mistakes. LOL

For December, the weather was pretty mild. Or so I was told. I’d only ever experienced one other December above ground. In Genesis, December had felt like every other month in an underground habitat—dry and damp at a steady sixty-eight degrees. Mild or not, I huddled into my jacket wondering if I was really cold or if my subconscious was trying to tell me to burrow deeper in my coat so that no one could find me.

New Years Resolutions

I've been hesitating to talk about New Years Resolutions. I didn't make any about my life outside of writing. Why? Well, because I need to lose weight. I've needed to lose it for about 10 years and at this point its gone beyond make a resolution about it kind of a thing. Its ongoing. And the other things? Be a better mom, wife, friend, etc...well, that is also things I have to think about every day and not just on January 1.

But, in terms of writing I did make some in my own mind. They basically involve just doing more writing, getting better at it, and taking more risks.

The Sad State Of The Lake

This was the view from the house we rented in Austin. It made more sense than all of us staying in hotel rooms for eight days. Instead, the whole family stayed together in a beautiful house by Lake Austin.

Except that Lake Austin isn't much of a lake at a moment because of the draught in Austin. The amazing writer Chandra Ryan tells me that they have finally started to get some rain so hopefully the next time I go the above lake will look a lot further than that.

But, it made me think about settings. An entire story could revolve around whether or not that lake is full or not. Don't you think?

As my plane took off yesterday, the woman next to me (don't even ask me to explain the seating arrangement on the plane, 5 of us, seats of 2, yes, it doesn't work, someone had to sit alone and my kids are all too young to do that) said "Goodbye, Austin, you beautiful girl, you."

I thought this was a great way to say goodbye to Austin, TX. It really is a beautiful city. This was not my first visit there, rather my forth, but this was the longest time I've ever gotten to spend there (8 days.)

It was really fun. We rented a house with the family and really got to spend some time together. We ate good barbecue, went to parks, bowling, the children's museum, and walks around UT Austin.

I also had the pleasure of seeing my Austin and my cousin and her beautiful little boy. And, I got to meet and have coffee with the amazing romance author Chandra Ryan. She was so nice, interesting, smart, funny, incredible really.

All in all, it was a great way to end 2011 and I am really excited to see what 2012 brings both personally and in the writing-zone for me.

We said goodbye to my father-in-law this year and I will always miss him. I think when I look back at 2011, that will mostly be what I remember. But, I would really like to say 'thank you' to all of you for everything. I know I don't say it enough.

Science fiction romance vs. contemporary romance

Most of my contracted stories and works-in-progress are science fiction romance, but my latest release, Beneath the Starry Sky is not. It’s a contemporary erotic romance; no aliens, no spaceships, no foreign planets, although there are a lot of stars. J

While I still try to keep the same pacing and emotion in my stories, the plots, settings and characters can be very different.

Plots – Maybe the plots are all very similar. I do believe that everyone across the universe deserves a happily-ever-after, regardless of race (including aliens), sexuality, and creed. But how the characters find their happily-ever-afters vary with every story.

Settings – In my science fiction romances, I’ve used cities and places I’m familiar with, or created my own planets and futuristic worlds. But in Beneath the Starry Sky, I set the story in Las Vegas, Nevada, a city I’ve never traveled to. While the city is foreign to me, it is not to many of my readers. Therefore, I had to ensure I had accurate details. After a shout-out to my fellow authors though, I found the details I needed to write this story.

Characters – This is my favorite part of writing science fiction romance. I can create a variety of different alien species and name them whatever I like, although I do try to keep the names pronounceable. I often use mythology to choose names as well. For example, in Celestial Seduction, Frey Berger and his home planet of Ginnun come from Norse mythology. In Beneath the Starry Sky, the hero and heroine are from Earth, but they are different from the normal population. Tamara Johnston has Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune skin disease, and Josh Summers has his own secret.

While there are these differences, I always try to encourage an emotional connection between the readers and my characters. And I like to show that love is possible for everyone.

When I first started writing, I asked a friend who’d had some success in it how to know what each individual publisher was looking for. How did I know what they wanted to read? She told me about Open Calls.

Recently, the amazing Hailey Edwards posted on her blog about an open call at a publisher I like. This gave me the idea (thanks Hailey) that perhaps I would start, every once in a while, posting open calls from publishers I know so that if people are looking for some they can find them on my blog.

Thank you so much for having me here, Rebecca! J

This is your debut novel, so please tell everyone a bit about yourself.

I’m a short, sarcastic blonde who teaches chemistry by day and writes about sexy wolves at night. I don’t think I’m as interesting as Mel or Kade though LOL.

Tell me about An Alpha’s Path. What is about and how did you get the idea to write it?

An Alpha’s Path was originally titled The Alpha and the PhD actually. The idea came to me when I was reading a few supernatural books and wondered what would happen if a girl in my shoes – not me LOL – found out the guy she just went out on a blind date with was a werewolf. What would you do? Mel’s reaction was even a surprise to me, so I was happy to put in on paper.

Are your characters pulled from real life or did your muse just make them up?

Mel is the only character somewhat based on anyone – me. By that, I mean her job and her looks. Everything else just came to me. (Thank you muse. J) The characters I have and the mates that find them are perfect for each other, so I do my best to allow them to work together and see what they come up with, rather than me just using people I know. Plus, I could never capture a person the way I need them too – people in real life don’t always need to be put in books.

What is the heat level of this book? How steamy should readers expect it to get?

Think sexy, rumpled bed sheets and love. Steamy. This is actually the tamest of the books I’ve written, but still damned hot. J (Love you Kade)

On a side note….you have a beautiful cover. Who did it?

Thank you so much! I am in love with it. LOL. My crit partner, Leia Shaw and her hubby made it for me. They are actually starting a company soon and will do more covers for other people. That means I have to share, but they deserve everything they get. They are amazing people.

What are you working on now?

I’m actually working on two books and plotting new series. O_o. Book 2 in the Redwood Pack series, A Taste for a Mate, is Jasper’s story. I’m almost done with it and then I will go into edits. Book 3 in the series is called Trinity Bound, I’m about halfway done and I’m really getting into it. I didn’t mean to be working on two books at once, but NaNoWriMo begged me to work on it. (I did make it to 50k on Trinity Bound in about 15 days BTW Whoot!)

My other series will not be in the Redwood Pack world. It’s a supernatural series called Dante’s Circle. I’m not going to go too much into it, but there are going to be some surprises along the way. J

In ‘real life’ you work in science, what made you want to write fiction?

I love fiction. I love romance. I write technical papers for my day job. I’m good at it, but I love diving into a new world, making my own way. Plus, werewolves are sexy. Just saying. J

Who are you favorite authors? Do you have a favorite book?

Oh my. That is such a tough question. I own over 5000 books and have re-read them all at least twice. I have a favorite genre – romance. But other than that, I can’t decide.

I will tell you however, what my favorite book I’ve read this week it. (I read at least one book a day, as a read annoyingly fast, so this is actually a good system for me LOL).

This week I read Lord of the Abyss by Nalini Singh. I’d already read the first three in the Royal House of Shadows series, each written by a different author. But Nalini’s was by far my favorite. I really liked them all, by Micah was swoon worth to me. *sigh*

Okay…some fun questions.

Favorite ice cream flavor?

It changes, but it’s never chocolate. Right now I’m digging butter pecan.

Favorite movie quote?

“Earn this.” Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. I cry every time.

My Sweet Little Adorable Son

Look at that face. Sigh. Adorable. Who would believe that as I write this blog post he is screaming his head off? Oh yes. In the corner, where he has been put in time out because he had a temper tantrum when we told him he couldn't have any more apple juice today. And I mean a BIG fit. So, off to the corner he went for his requisite two minute time out also known in this house as 'get it together kid' time.

He is the youngest of three children, all boys, which you know if you've read my biography. I don't assume any of you have ever read it. But, I am in fact the mother of 3. With my oldest, 6, right now I am dealing with school and extracurricular activities. With my middle son I am handling teaching and obeying rules. He is also learning he can't lie to me and get away with it.

But with my 2 year old--its all about not screaming when you don't get what you want.

It's not that I can't understand. Of course I can. I want to scream every time I don't get what I want. I really do. I want to scream and bellow and stomp my foot and well....never mind.

Like right now. This chapter is giving me fits. I want to AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Parenting Is Tough

I don't look like this. Do you?

I love Gwenyth Paltrow as an actress. She is really, really talented but sometimes when I read what she and other hollywood moms say about parenting and I want to pull out my hair. I can't believe that any of them are actually as perfect in their parenting as they say they are.

I am aware that probably a team of stylists made Ms. Paltrow look that beautiful for whatever event she was going to that evening. But, in all seriousness. Who can look like that and be a mother?

For example, I got really dressed up to go to a friend's birthday party a couple of weeks ago. I'd gone out to buy a new outfit and for being overweight and not particularly stylish, I looked pretty good.

I came down the stairs with a few minutes to spare before we had to leave. The sitter was with the kids. I felt great. And then the kids ran towards, dirty and messy from their activities and smudged their grimy hands all over me.

I ask myself--does Gwenyth Paltrow have these problems? Somehow I think not.

My Current Selection of Favorite Television Shows

So, I think by now you all know how much I love to read. I talk about it enough. I love, love, love it. But, I also adore television shows. I thought I would share with you some of them and then you could tell me what your favorite ones are and maybe I'll try them out too.

This is actually based on a series of books I read as a young girl. They were written by someone named LJ Smith. I would say that the series, which I am enjoying, isn't based entirely on the show. It's not exact. Some of the characters have the same names and the premise is similar. But I'm enjoying it all the same. Makes me feel like I'm back to being a teenager.

Okay, True Blood is so good it has to be bad for me. Alexander Skarsgard has become Eric so much that when I read the books now I picture him playing Eric. How am I going to wait until next summer?
This show makes me laugh and laugh. I love the heart of it!

Okay, I'm really obsessed with this. The Walking Dead may be the best show on television.

There are days I get really annoyed that we haven't yet met the mother but the acting is great and when the show is on, its really really on.

Every week this show turns what I think I know about plot on its head and spins it around. Very well done, very well acted.

I think in some ways this is my family. I love it. This show has the potential to make me week and make me laugh. I love it.

Okay, I thought this show was going to be your traditional scary, horror show. It is that and so much more. Psychological. Scary. Awesome.

What Happened To The Weekend?

Every week, I look forward to the weekend. I love my family and I always have these fabulous ideas of things we are going to do on the weekend. But, inevitable, between the kids' activities and the things my husband and I have going on, the weekend is over before it begins.

Does anyone else ever feel this way?

Goodbye Archie

The picture above is of my husband holding our cat, Archie. We had to put Archie to sleep about three weeks ago. I've mentioned it online but not dwelled on it too much. Having lost my father-in-law earlier this year, I thought maybe everyone had enough of 'Sad Rebecca' so I've managed to channel my sadness for our loss elsewhere.

But, Saturday my sister-in-law left our home carrying the remainder of Archie's stuff with her. She has a cat, Gypsy, who actually used to be our cat too. But Gypsy didn't like living in a house with dogs and so many kids running about. So Suzanne took her home to Maine with her to live in their farm house with one child, aged five, and no other animals. She's as happy as can be there. It seemed right that Archie's stuff go to Gypsy as they once lived together under this roof.

The removal of even his food dish from our home brought about another finality that I finally felt like blogging about.

Archie was eighteen years old. That is old for a house cat. He was salt-and-pepper and totally in charge of all the animals in our life. When I first met him, he was eight years old and he liked me. Sat right down on my lap. It was like he gave his permission to my husband to date me. When I would go away for one reason or another, either for work or travel, and then I would return, he would wake me at 3 AM purring in my ear to tell me he welcomed me home.

He was never sick, not until the end, when age finally caught up to him. And at some point it just became kinder to stop his pain.

My favorite memory of Archie came from when we were all living in Louisiana. My cat, Gypsy, had gotten outside. She came meowing at the door frantically and I let her back in. I'd had no idea she'd gotten out of the house. Following her in was a very irate dog. He ran into the house growling and chasing the cat. My own dog, a border collie, leapt up on the couch wanting nothing to do with the situation.

Before either my husband or I could react, Archie tore into the room. He jumped on top of the dog and kicked the heck out of the dog until the dog whimpered and ran from my house. Then Archie walked slowly and triumphantly back to his nap. Who needed a big strong dog? Turned out our dog was a coward. It didn't matter. We had Archie.

He needed to put up with this as much as he needed to get blown to bits and put back together again. Besides, Powers, Inc. had way too much work lined up. The government was calling, missiles were aimed at the United States, rich aristocrats had missing pieces of jewelry, a madman had a vendetta against the makers of bubble wrap . . . and his brother was on his honeymoon for another two weeks.

This incident proved a good thing, though. At least now, he didn't have to waste his time watching her make spaghetti and thinking about how hot she would look going down on him. Alice might be attractive, but she was mean as a snake.

What I'm Waiting For

On my desktop, I keep a .txt entitled What I'm Waiting For. It helps me keep track of things. I do have an Excel Spreadsheet that keeps track of what I'm writing, how many words I have written in it, where I have sold various books, and their release dates. Also, I have a .txt that keeps track of my writing order. This is how I handle the many plot bunnies that present themselves to me all the time. I just put down the idea on the bottom of the list.

If this sounds nutty, keep in mind I am managing four different series at the moment. Wanting to write them and hopefully publish them in a timely manner means I don't write whatever I want whenever the feeling inspires me. I have to be inspired to write what I should write. The good news? I love these series, I am always inspired to write them.

But, I don't like to jump from one world into another. It's odd, for example, to go from Westervelt to Warrior. One is adult and erotic and the other is Young Adult and not. I have to get my mind out of the sexual tension and into the sexual restraint.

So, in between books I do get to write things that have come to me. Return to the Sea was one of those things that came to me. One Night With A Wolf was another. Good things that I am really proud of having written.

But, in the mean time, I have the What I'm Waiting For .txt on my desktop. What am I waiting for right now? Two covers, two edits, and two submissions. Hopefully, I'll soon be able to move them from the Waiting file to the Excel Spreadsheet.

In the meantime, I write. Because I LOVE it.

As anyone who follows my tweets or my blogs knows--I love to go to Broadway Shows. I'm very lucky because of my close vicinity to New York City we get to go to Broadway Show regularly. Saturday night, the hubby and I got to see Lysistrata Jones, which was still in previews. To say I enjoyed the show would be an understatement.

It is funny and happy. The cast has a an incredibly energy and they are clearly loving every minute of being on the stage.

What concerns me? New shows that are not made by the creators of South Park (I loved Book of Mormon) are not easy to sell on Broadway. It seems to me that people only want to watch Revivals. Please don't get me wrong--I love watching revivals. Anything Goes was awesome. But really? Don't we all want to experience new things too?

It is my hope that people will go see Lysistrata Jones and the other shows that are coming out for the first time. The shows that were not movies first or are not getting their fifth run on Broadway. Let's give new stuff a fair shot.

I'm Losing My Mind!

Am I the only parent out there who hates long weekends?

It is 9:11 in the morning here in New Jersey as I write this. My 3 children have, so far today, fought, destroyed their bedroom, had to clean up orange marker off the door to one of their rooms that they colored on last night, peed on the floor--twice (the 2 year old)--eaten breakfast, lost their video games, changed into their Halloween costumes, and made a mess in the basement. And those are just the things that I know about.

Today is Veterans Day and I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the men and women of our armed forces and their families for the sacrifice they make every day for the safety of our country. You have my most deepest thanks.

It is a long weekend. That means there are 3 days until they go back to school. They were home yesterday too. If only it were possible to take them all on vacation every time they have off. But that isn't a reality.

So I'm losing my mind today and hopefully it will come back at some point. If anyone finds it, let me know.

Did you all miss me? Where have I been?

Well, we had a snow storm a few days before Halloween. This is really unusual in my part of the country. Our snow usually comes a bit later in the season. I wasn't really worried. We're good with snow here. But, for some reason, this particular storm (and I've heard a lot of stories as to why this was...everything from leaves to sap freezing) broke the limbs off a lot of trees. The trees in turn took down the power lines. The power lines went down. Boom, no power for six days. But I'm lucky. Lots of others don't have it back on yet.

We went to my parents place, who had a generator. So we had heat and electricity but no cable since the storm also took out the cable.

But, I'm back now. Did ya miss me? LOL

She knew every contour of his face. He had black hair, very similar to hers and a face that looked like it had seen more worries than most people his age even though it was still smooth and unlined. The eyes were haunted even though they pretended to be jovial. No one should have eyes that were that hidden. The windows to his soul held the look of a person who was totally in control all of the time. She wondered if he ever smiled or did he just pretend to?

The Plot Thickens

I will admit that I had a hard time at the beginning of this work-in-progress. The hero didn't like how he was being portrayed and he's a character that has been in many books before. He is someone I care a great deal about.

But, now it looks like things are really picking up with the story. I'm very hopeful that this will keep up even as I try very hard to figure out how I am going to manage all of this with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

I got tested today using an EMG test. I hated the test but it did confirm the diagnosis. I have Carpal Tunnel.

I'm trying very hard to stay positive about all things. Positive thinking and all that. This is not easy for a person who tends to be dark by nature.

Lately, I feel like this is the health blog. First my potential carpal tunnel and now I can write about how I haven't slept in days because of youngest son's croop. But, he woke up this morning without a fever so that is good!

When I considered having a 3rd child, everyone told me that third children were so easy, so happy to just go along. Somewhere on his way out of my womb, someone forgot to give that memo to my 3rd son.

My other children would stay in their beds when they were sick, they would sleep, and get better. This child? In my bed. He insists. Will not sleep but insists on being on top of either me or my husband the entire night. I understand that he needs the comfort. I want to give it to him. But, wow, exhaustion has set in.

Hopefully tomorrow we'll all be back on track.

A Problem I Ignored For Too Long

So, yesterday I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I could talk about how much pain I am in but, really, no one wants to hear about it. It is my own fault for ignoring the symptoms as long as I did.

In any case, as I wait to have the test that will tell the doctor just how much nerve damage I have done so we can determine the next course of action, I have to stay off the computer for a while. I am going to have to severely limit the amount of writing time I do or even how much social networking I can enjoy.

Please forgive me if it takes me a little while to get back to you for a while.

Sad Faced Today

With the coming of the cold weather my parents have, smartly, taken themselves down to Florida. I miss them already and they only left this morning. I guess I've never really grown up. I'm raising three children and I still want my mommy and daddy like I'm ten years old. Oh well. Perhaps I will never change.

I finished writing chapter five in my work-in-progress (which is the Westervelt Wolves book for those of you keeping track) and after I do some reading and pick up one of my children I hope to finish another chapter today.

I feel like I've stumbled, blindly, into a time of reflection for myself. What will be the next step when the path I am on comes to an end? What will I write next? I'm fortunate that my husband and children love their crazy writer wife/mother.

I can tell you one thing: never again will I maintain writing four different series at the same time. Two. Maximum Two.

Too Much To Do

Today, one of my sons is going on a field trip. All of the parents were invited to go and I really wanted to. My mother never missed a field trip when I was growing up. But I can't. Because I have the other two children to pick up from school and the field trip will not return in time for me to do that. I know this isn't that big of a deal but the sad face on my boy when he left for school knowing that I wouldn't be one of the parents on the trip nearly broke my heart.

I thought that putting my third son in nursery school half-days would give me more time but what it has actually done is just given me more time in the car. Still, the socialization is good for him. And he seems to be enjoying it now.

Two of kids have after school activities and I am so busy with them that I can't imagine how it will possibly work when the third one gets started with his own sets of things to do. How will it work?

Oh yeah and then there is writing and promotion of new releases...

Rebecca's Random Musings

So, I called this blog Rebecca's Random Musings because I had this idea that I would use it to muse about anything I wanted to talk about. I have two other topic specific blogs and I thought this one could be about me or anything that I was thinking about. I had this idea that I would stop in the middle of some random Thursday and blog about something cool I had just seen while I was picking up my kids.

But I've never really used it that way. I did come on here a lot to muse when my father-in-law died in February but other than that I mostly talk about books, book videos, book releases, blog posts, book reviews. You're getting the general idea.

Why is that? Do I have SO much book news that I fill every moment of every day talking about. Must everything I say be about writing? Frankly, I cannot believe that anyone wants to hear me say another word about the writing process. I am tired of listening to myself. (And that is never a good thing.)

So, today, I thought I'd give it a try. I'd open up and see if I could use this blog to stop and talk about something that has nothing to do with writing. Of course, I don't expect anyone to actually read it. It will be one of those blog posts that gets no attention. And that is fine too!

I have three children. They all have their needs. Their strengths and (gasp) weaknesses. They are, after all, human beings. Even if in my mind they are close to perfect.

My middle child is quite bright. (They all are.) When we are out of the house he is well behaved. An 'angel' another mother said after a play date. I've seen him with his friends and at school. I can see that he knows how to be kind, to be a good friend. In general, his teachers love him. He is four years old.

At home? Lately, he is in a perpetual state of trouble. Today, I have had to speak to him about being nice to his little brother so much I thought I might choke on the words. Feeling like being 'patient parent' I talked to all three of them (yes, the 2 year old too) and I told them we would have a 'start over.' That all problems of the day would be washed away and we would begin again. No one would be in trouble if they all just behaved from that moment on. Really, this is for the four year old's benefit. I do not want to be always punishing him when he is home. I understand that now that his brother is 2 and into all of his stuff, he is feeling territorial. I try and try to remind him how nicely his older brother has always treated him and encourage him to treat his younger brother in the same way.

Does it work? Ha! Ha, I say!

Not two seconds after I gave my speech about starting over and being good to one another, he was grabbing his brother my the cheeks to get what he wanted from him.

I'm glad that in writing I can make plots turn the way I want them to. Because in my real life I cannot seem to get a handle on any of it.

Kyra Soloman has been a successful actress in Hollywood since she was fifteen years old. Now, about to turn thirty, she's had enough of the scene. She wants to move to New York City and rediscover her love of acting.  

Brent Hallow is the new 'it' guy in town. He's recently starred as a vampire in a teenage angst movie. He's also twenty-four years old, and the fact that Kyra is attracted to him makes her feel very old.  

But one hot night at a Hollywood house party will show them both they share more than the love of acting…and the real desire for rough sex as well.

“Scarlett, I could feel your eyes on me through the whole fight. I could smell you. It was hard to concentrate.”

His voice was low, husky, and before she could stop herself with worry, she reached out and stroked his bare chest with her fingers.

Bah Humbug or Happy Birthday To Me

So, its my birthday. When I was younger I used to love my birthdays but today, for the second y year in a row, my husband has had somewhere he has to be out of town on my birthday. So, with the exception of my sister-in-law who sent flowers yesterday (and they were beautiful), no one has remembered my birthday today in my house.

Granted, it is early in the morning.

But my Bah-Humbugness began quite early today at around 1:45 AM when my second son, who was sleeping on the 3rd floor with my mother-in-law, came downstairs screaming at the top of his lungs. I'm not exactly sure about what. He wasn't really awake. So, I brought him back upstairs, retucked him in, comforted him, got yelled at by my mother in law who didn't know what was happening, and then came back downstairs. I finally fell back asleep about two hours later. Then he woke up again, this time calling out for his Daddy.

So, of course the almost two year old came into my room crying at around 6 AM. I had to send him back to his room until he stopped crying. Here we have sat together. The kids don't seem to have remembered my birthday. (I don't expect them to at 6, 4 and almost 2.) My mother in law doesn't seem to have remembered. My husband is in a time difference and I won't hear from him for hours. My parents will remember but I may not speak to them for hours. They are taking me to dinner tonight. Right now, however, as I am so exhausted I can't see straight its hard for me to imagine that there will be a dinner time today.

I really don't care that much about my birthday anymore. I used to. A lot. I always made a fuss over birthdays (and still do for my kids) because it was a chance to show the people we love how much we love them. But I guess Mommies don't get birthdays in my house today.

Thank you for the Facebook messages. They were nice to wake up to. They really did make me smile.

Bah. Humbug. GRRR. I'm wondering if there is any way I can get a nap.

Movie Review...

SPOILERS. STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS MOVIE.

Last night, I had the opportunity to go to the movies with my friend and, do to scheduling issues, we went to see One Day starring Anne Hathaway (who, for the record I usually LOVE...have you seen Rachel Getting Married....5 Stars) and Jim Sturgess.

The movie is an adaptation of a book, which I have not read. Perhaps if I had read the book I would have been better prepared for what I had signed on to see and not been so disappointed with the movie. Or maybe I would have been anyway.

Right off the bat, I found Anne Hathaway's british accent to be really off-putting. Maybe it was correct. I'm not an expert on these things but I've never had such a problem listening to Gwenyth Paltrow or Renee Zellweger do british accents so I don't think its just a question of an American taking on a British Accent. I suspect that I am correct--and that it is really, really bad.

The movie takes place in one year segments from the year 1998-2011. Each scene popping up a different year with the year actually popping up behind the actors somewhere on the screen to let you know what year you are in. If you forget what year it is, do not worry, the actors' hair changes to fit the time and the music in the background is a clear clue that you are somewhere in the year 1992 or 1998.

But Emma and Dexter meet at college graduation in 1998 and, although they almost have a one night stand, end up not sleeping together. Thus, starts their friendship with Emma continuing to lust after Dexter (silently) and Dexter basically being SOB to everyone around him, including Emma while they all wait (including his mother who dies somewhere in the early 90s) for him to become the good man he will eventually grow up to be.

That doesn't happen very quickly and, for me, at some point I stopped seeing anything about Dexter to particularly love. And I stopped liking Emma who stood by year after year continuing to love him from afar while acting the role of his best friend even while he treats her terribly.

Soon, however, Dexter will knock up his girlfriend Sylvie and need to get married. His thriving career as a late night host (he's awful) ends and he goes to work for a college friend's organic food corporation. Emma's writing career finally takes off after a brief foray into teaching and a relationship with a terrible stand up comedian. (See how they've reversed roles? He started out rich and successful and now she is?) In case you were wondering, the wind changing actually happens in the background as Dexter stares out at a strange wind storm that picks up one day. Yeah...I caught that. So did everyone else.

Eventually, Dexter's marriage ends and LOOK there is Emma. Happy to leave her relationship with Jean-Claude the Jazz musician in Paris to RUN to Dexter, who is looking much worse for the ware. (Really? Who did Jim Sturgess' stubble in this movie?) The movie does a very strange thing. They completely gloss over the fact that apparently Emma and Dexter have slept together the year before. They discuss it at this point with the audience going...um...I watched Emma and Dexter eating spaghetti together, I don't get to even see a lead up to their sleeping together?

But the movie is not without sex. No, we get lots of sex once they are married. (Seemed a very odd decision to me.)

Then Emma wants a baby, she's not getting pregnant, she's unhappy, Dexter is running his own coffee shop, and she is riding her bike to go see him. BOOM. Emma is struck by a truck. She dies on the side of the road and we get to watch her do it.

Yes, in this movie billed as a ROMANCE with voice overs saying lovely things about LOVE, Emma dies on the side of the road.

Now Dexter falls apart. And continues to do so for about 15 more minutes intermingled with more scenes of Dexter and Emma's life together that don't seem to add anything to the movie. A lot of their first day together.

That is the movie. One Day. Again, had I known it was this TYPE of movie, I might have enjoyed it. I don't mind watching things that are upsetting. I do all the time. But I need to know thats what I'm seeing. And shame on the movie promotion for not making that clear. Also, I really felt like the actors didn't particularly care for one another. They had very little chemistry and it seemed like a lot of going through the motions, something I don't usually see with Anne Hathaway.
